The Winter Harbor Theatre Company was founded by Caitlin Shetterly in Portland, Maine in the spring of 2003 with the mission “to produce quality theatre that is emotionally, socially and politically daring, in an effort to encourage respectful dialogue and foster the development of a more conscious and compassionate community.”

Since 2003, WHTC has produced a one-act play by Tony Kushner in response to the war in Iraq; a one-woman show dealing with eating disorders by singer song-writer Cosy Sheridan, a dramatic reading about divorce based on Fault Lines, a collection of stories edited by Caitlin Shetterly; a staged reading of James Joyce’s short story “The Dead;” a full run of Lanford Wilson’s play "Serenading Louie;" a production of Eve Ensler’s "The Vagina Monologues;" and a series of entirely original works, the "Letters to..." series which was concieved with "Letters to Ohio" in 2004, in response to the election.  "Ohio" was followed by "Letters to Katrina" which responded to the Katrina disaster and then "Letters to Baghdad" which focused on the troops' experience in Iraq. "Letters to Katrina" was named by the Maine Sunday Telegram one of the "10 Best Art Events in Maine in 2005" and "Letters to Baghdad" was called "provocative and powerful" by the Portland Press Herald.

"Letters to Baghdad" was followed by "Letters to the NRA," which had its world premiere in Portland, Maine in 2007. 'Letters to the NRA" responded to the VaTech shootings, gun control, America's addiction to violence and examined what it means to be an American.

Our newest show will premiere in the fall of 2008.

In addition to our regular theatre productions, WHTC has successfully planned and implemented the acting program at the Long Creek Youth Development Center (Southern Maine's Juvenile Jail) in South Portland. WHTC teaches major Shakespeare plays at Long Creek, which culminate in performances for the whole facility, family, friends and peers. Past projects have been Hamlet, Othello and "A Hip-Hop Romeo and Juliet" and "MCJC: Julius Caesar."
